The situation

What has happened

Deng Malual, an enterprise trainer at Merriwa Holdings, received a not yet competent result in the assessment cluster and lodged an appeal on the grounds that his workplace evidence portfolio was not considered. The appeal is acknowledged in the complaints and appeals register with an outcome due by 4 October. You were not involved in the original decision. The original assessor's records, the tool version used, the marking guide and Deng's portfolio are available. Deng has asked to meet with a support person present. The Compliance and Quality Manager wants a written outcome with reasons that would withstand external review.

Your brief. Review the original assessment and the portfolio against the unit requirements and the rules of evidence, meet the appellant, reach an independent decision, communicate it in writing with reasons and update the complaints and appeals register and the student register.

What to look for

Evidence guide

The review must be evidence based and independent, with a clear statement of which requirements the portfolio does or does not satisfy. The meeting must show natural justice: listening, clarifying and not pre-judging. The written outcome must give reasons a lay reader can follow and state external review rights. Register updates must be timely and accurate.

The student's evidence summary lists every record they created or changed in the systems named above, their notes and the tasks they ticked. Verify it against the deliverables and your own assessment tool.
